Smithers, located in Fayette County, is a small community situated along the banks of the Kanawha River with a population of 904.


The Burger Carte Restaurant in Smithers boasts a cult following. Locals insist upon the superiority of the Al Burger, and the hotdogs have been featured on Burger Carte was also listed on the 101 Unique Places to Dine in West Virginia. The Christian Family Book Shoppe has been a family owned business since 1977 and boasts the largest collection of West Virginia state glass artisans work in the region.


Valley High and Valley Elementary Schools are located in Smithers.

Around the turn of the 20th century, Smithers had the largest Italian immigrant population in the state. The mascot for Valley High School is a greyhound.
